VoIP-Enabled OmniVox

Overview

VoIP-enabled OmniVox is a multi-service platform for with a graphical service creation environment (OmniView®) for the rapid development, testing and deployment of IP-based enhanced services. Depending on the specific requirements of a particular installation, OmniVox can function as a standalone media server, a softswitch application server or a media gateway to provide prepaid calling, IP Voice Response (IPVR), network announcers, fax services, voice mail, unified messaging, voice-activated dialing and other services. OmniVox can integrate with APEX service-ready applications such as Announcers, Prepaid, Messaging and Wireless E-Mail, or can be used to develop and deploy custom applications. It can both receive and transmit DTMF via the audio channel of H.323, via H.245 and also through the softswitch. VoIP-enabled OmniVox is based on the H.323 standard and is interoperable with any H.323 compliant gateway, gatekeeper, IP phone or other terminal. SIP and MGCP interfaces are currently in development and will be available in the near future.

Application Development with VoIP-enabled OmniVox

The OmniView Service Creation Environment allows for the complete scripting of media applications. OmniView simplifies application development by breaking down the available processes during a session to a series of icons. In a fully object-oriented environment, a developer can link these icons together to create a graphical flow chart of the application. OmniView's graphical user interface (GUI) provides cut-and-paste, copy, highlight and many other easy editing commands for connecting the icons. After establishing the basic media application logic, the user can right-click on the icons to access the underlying command record screens for configuring each command. Filling in the information entry screens defines all possible options for the caller and all possible outcomes for the session. Recording and editing of messages via the Speech Editor completes the basic process.

For further customization, developers can directly integrate external routines into the media application using a C/C++ or BASIC language API.

Key Media Processing and Management Features

In addition to service creation tools, OmniVox provides runtime and management features including:

Gatekeeper Interfacing: OmniVox can interface with gatekeepers for the registration and deregistration of sessions via H.255.

IP Routing: The DIAL and BRIDGE commands provided by OmniVox are used to connect any combination of PSTN and IP channels. They can be used to connect an inbound IP channel to an outbound IP channel, to connect an inbound IP channel to an outbound PSTN channel, to connect an inbound PSTN channel to an outbound IP channel or an inbound PSTN channel to an outbound PSTN channel. The IPROUTE command transfers a session from either the PSTN or IP network to a destination gateway, IP phone or other H.323-compliant terminal.

Quality of Service (QoS) Monitoring: This feature reports lost packets, jitter (as defined in RFC 1889) and DTMF that have not been treated by the firmware. QoS information is available in real time for each call, and is also summarized after call completion.

Routing Tables: OmniVox provides internal routing tables that use a best-fit digit masking algorithm to convert telephone numbers to intermediate gateway IP addresses to complete calls.

Support for Multiple Protocols: In addition to H.323, OmniVox also supports analog, T1, ISDN, E1, customer and SS7 protocols. Support for SIP and MGCP will be available in the fourth quarter of 2001.

Remote Administration: Users can remotely control OmniVox's administrative functions and receive its traps using its SNMP module.

Line Management: This feature allows administrators to assign applications to lines, to start and stop specific lines in order to update or change applications while other lines continue processing media and to check the functioning of selected lines for the debugging of applications. The Debug Level button allows users to choose the type of debugging information OmniVox displays.

Reporting: OmniVox allows administrators to generate detailed reports based on session counts (the total number of sessions that came into each application for each hour of a given day), line counts (the total number of sessions coming into a specific port on a given day) and user-defined counts (linked to specific commands, they tally the total number of times a particular option was selected by callers). OmniVox also maintains session detail records and a daily error log that administrators can review.

Migration Path

Because OmniVox is available for TDM, IP and bridged networks, it can offer circuit-based carriers a cost-effective migration path to packet-based services. Any application/call flow created in OmniView can immediately run on any OmniVox platform, supporting any protocol. This means there is no need to modify applications when switching between TDM and IP networks or when changing underlying hardware.
